about

One day i was feeling unwell. A friend said that I looked tired and i told him I had been feeling ill. He said, "You're an open book, my friend". I replied that that would make a good song lyric. So i decided to work it into something.
I began making a list of what makes someone an open book. At first i was thinking of myself. But part-way down the list, I realized that i was drawing these thoughts from a (different) friend of mine. So i went along with it and made the song about him in particular. (I already had most of the music in-place, the story was added.)

lyrics

Never known to miss a beat
That drum of yours is gold indeed.
More than some ever need
Miner's pride is there on your sleeve.

Your face tells tales that words can't hide.
When you speak the words don't lie.
No game is known, or plan is shown.
The hand you show was seen long ago.

Take my wheel anytime
The long way home
Wind in my face
Like so many times
you've done for me
You're an open book, my friend.

Painted scene, alpine cone
Open door, open home.
No surprise, devil in your eye.
Soon that wry smile will arrive.

Take my wheel anytime
The long way home
Wind in my face
Like so many times
You've done for me
You're an open book, my friend.

The warm, setting sun at our backs
Shadows tall
That long quiet road
The road will still call
Calling to me
With or without my friend.
